Using the Jones Collections

Jones Memorial Library has one of the largest collections of Virginia history and genealogy in the state.  Collections are open to the public for research use in our Reading Room.

Upon arrival, visitors are asked to sign the guest register.  Patrons then meet with a Reference Assistant at our Information Desk to identify materials of interest and discuss their research question.

The library operates a closed stacks policy.  Researchers may use the library’s materials from the collection in a centralized Reading Room.  In addition to the library’s physical collection, selected materials are digitized and available in our online collection.  The library also maintains three public computers with free access to Ancestry.com Library Edition and four microfilm readers.

Enslavement Records

Jones Memorial Library’s manuscript collections include documents that name and enumerate enslaved persons who lived in Lynchburg and other locations across the U.S. South.

Library staff conduct and publish original research from these resources on an ongoing basis in an effort to make names and information about the lives of enslaved persons available to descendants.

Materials are added to our DIGITAL COLLECTIONS whenever possible – we describe these materials with keywords including “enslavement”, “slavery”, and “enslaved persons.”  We recommend using a variety of keywords to search for materials.

Visit our ENSLAVEMENT IN LYNCHBURG  webpage for updates on transcribed resources, current projects, and institutional partners.
